About the Project

There aren’t just 50 of us. There aren’t just 100 of us. There are many thousands of us..
This page gives a voice to everyone who opposes the planned CO2 storage facility near Prinos—including those who can’t attend the rallies.

What’s it about?

The Prinos oil field, which is nearly depleted, lies between Thassos and Kavala. In the future, carbon dioxide (CO2) from industrial facilities is to be permanently stored there, about 3 kilometers below the seafloor. The operator is EnEarth, a subsidiary of the energy company Energean.

In February 2026, the relevant Greek authority (HEREMA) granted the storage permit: initially for up to 1 million metric tons of CO2 per year, for 25 years. In the long term, the plan is to store up to 3 million metric tons per year. The CO2 is to be delivered from an external source—compressed and liquefied.

Why are so many people against it?

Many people on Thassos and along the coast of Kavala are worried:

  • Our Ocean: What impact would an industrial waste disposal site right off the coast of the island have on the water, fish, and the fishing industry—today and 50 years from now?
  • Our livelihood: Thassos thrives on tourism, clean seas, and unspoiled nature. Even the perception of being a “CO2 sink” can be harmful.
  • Our Future: CO2 is to be stored for decades. The responsibility for this lies with our children and grandchildren.
  • Our Voice: We haven’t been asked for our input. Decisions about our island should not be made without us.

Why this page?

Often, only a few people attend rallies—not because few people care, but because many are working, don’t have time during the busy season, are older, or live farther away. Here, anyone can take a minute to explain why they’re against it. Taken together, hundreds and thousands of voices show that this is not just the opinion of a few.

Who can participate?

  • Anyone who lives or works on Thassos or along the coast of Kavala, or who feels a connection to the region.
  • Even older adults without a smartphone: family, friends, or caregivers can take the photo for them.
  • It’s up to you: video or audio only, by name or anonymously (age and location only).

It’s that easy

  1. Tap “Record”
  2. Record a short video or just an audio—about a minute. Sample sentences help you get started.
  3. Enter your name, age, and location, then submit.
  4. We take a quick look at each recording. After that, it will appear on the Voices Wall.

What does it do?

Every voice makes the wall bigger—and more visible—to politicians, government agencies, the media, and the public. It’s hard to overlook a large number of real people with faces, voices, and locations.
